What is the Difference Between a Maid and Housekeeper?

Learn about the differences between maids and housekeepers - from services offered to prices charged - so you can make an informed decision when hiring help for your home.

What is the Difference Between a Maid and Housekeeper?

The difference between maids and housewives can be due to the services they provide. Maids offer cleaning services such as dusting, cleaning windows, sweeping, changing bedding and scrubbing bathrooms. Housewives, on the other hand, tend to offer more exhaustive services than maids. This includes dusting, vacuuming, cleaning every room in the house, washing windows, mopping, taking out trash and recyclables, cleaning bathrooms, etc.

They can also be hired to handle larger tasks, such as a detailed spring cleaning of your home from top to bottom. The biggest differences between a housekeeper and a domestic worker are the prices they charge, the types of work they perform and their availability. On the one hand, waitresses offer services that focus on maintaining their customers' homes. Housewives, on the other hand, generally run errands and perform routine tasks for their clients, while also performing the tasks of a domestic worker.

A housekeeper or maid is a person who helps with cleaning and other projects around the house. A housekeeper is usually hired by a family who provides everything needed for the job. Women who worked as domestic servants tended to be lower in the socioeconomic hierarchy than the landlords for whom they worked. In Victorian England, all middle class families had “help”, but for most small households, this would be just an employee, the maid of all the jobs, often known colloquially as “the girl”.

It is important to remember that there are differences in the type of tasks and work functions of housewives and that confusion between housewives and maids is very common, which is why housewives charge more than maids in advance. Not to mention, you won't have to spend time recruiting, posting an advertisement, reviewing resumes, conducting pre-interview evaluations, performing background checks, checking references, and other time-consuming tasks to find the best maid or housekeeper for your home. Like the prices of waitresses and housekeepers, the flexibility of their schedules depends on how they run their businesses. Finding the right person to help you clean your house would be great if you decide that you want to move to another house.

To some, the word “servant” may seem like a perfectly acceptable way to describe a house cleaner, but it's full of all kinds of historical and cultural baggage. However, because maids don't have a varied to-do list, they generally don't need tips as often as housewives. Choosing a domestic worker is a fantastic option for people who don't have time to clean the inside of an oven, but still have time to do the laundry. This makes it easy for potential customers to tell the difference between a maid and a housekeeper.

Cleaning services can help keep your home clean, but they're more than just a way to lose sight of the dust bunnies.
